Shakespeare by Candlelight
Pitch Deck | October 2025
Heimat Event Proposal
“Double double, toil and trouble…”
Embrace spooky season this October with our Foolish x Heimat collaboration. Spend an intimate evening with us as we move through a compilation of scenes and monologues from Shakespeare's darkest works all accompanied by a live musician.
Written By William Shakespeare
Directed/Rescripted by Mikey Mulhearn, Jahel Corban Caldera, and Daria Good
Concept
Step into the candlelit seclusion of Heimat’s private dining room, where shadows dance on the walls and the air hums with the tremor of live strings. For one night only, Foolish Production Co. invites you to a curated journey through Shakespeare’s most haunting words—scenes and monologues drawn from his darkest tragedies and supernatural tales.
Each piece is woven together like chapters of a séance, beckoning the ghosts, witches, and murderers of the Bard’s imagination to the table. Between courses of rich conversation and wine, a live musician underscores the evening—threading tension, melancholy, and magic through every moment.
This is not a typical night at the theatre. This is theatre drawn close, stripped bare, and whispered directly into your ear. The audience and actors share the same breath, the same table, the same conspiratorial thrill.
Why it Works:
Intimacy – A private dining room becomes a secret performance space, dissolving the boundary between performer and guest.
Atmosphere – Shakespeare’s most chilling moments are amplified by live/recorded music and close proximity.
Exclusivity – A limited audience ensures each guest feels like a participant in a rare, fleeting experience.
Immersion – Guests are enveloped in sound, candlelight, and the charged energy of the Bard’s language.
Tone & Feel:
Think velvet-draped mystery meets Elizabethan séance—wine glasses glinting in low light, words cutting through the hush, a bow drawn across strings lingering in the air. This is Shakespeare in his most shadowed form, brought to life for those bold enough to lean in.
Production Elements:
Use of LED candles as the only lighting source
We will use the room setup as is, staging around the established furniture
Use of a live musician or a (provided by us) record player utilized by the actors involved (we have done this in a previous production)
Addition of chairs around the outer perimeter of the space to include more audience members OR standing room in which they audience can shift around
We would love to finish the evening with a dramatic table scene from Titus Andronicus which would involve choreographed violence

About Foolish
At Foolish Production Co, we make bold, beautiful mischief through theatre and film.
Our mission is to celebrate, challenge, and expand our understanding of ourselves and one another through affordable, communal, and daringly innovative storytelling. Whether classical or contemporary, every Foolish production is designed with its space in mind—be it a rooftop sundeck, bustling bar, or traditional stage—to ignite an experience that blurs the line between audience and actor, echoing the spirit of early theatre.
We believe in stripping away the unnecessary to uncover the extraordinary. Through conscious casting, sharp reinterpretation, and space-specific design, we invite our audiences into a revelatory encounter—one that is immediate, intimate, and unmistakably alive.
Notable productions from Foolish Production Co include a queer reimagining of A Midsummer Night’s Dream set in an immersive nightclub; a critically acclaimed, stripped-down staging of Angels in America: Millennium Approaches and Perestroika; and a raw, visceral Titus Andronicus designed specifically for the back club room of a downtown LA bar.
Each of these productions featured historically inspired design elements—communal lighting, unconventional seating that placed audiences within the action, and bold, inclusive casting. Actors of diverse genders, sexualities, races, and identities stepped into roles traditionally denied them, reclaiming classical works with urgency and vision.

Critic Reviews
“Foolish’s company of players are youthful, eloquent and very agile, every word well-paced and spoken clearly, and it’s a delight to see this work brought to life in clever “gender-neutral” roles.”
— Tricia Stubbs, Theatre Be Spoken Here on A Midsummer Night’s Dream
“Foolish Productions’ Measure for Measure is edgy, hip and rough-around-the-edges.”
“Under Mulhearn’s direction, the show moves quickly and the play’s five acts and multiple plot twists are condensed into one action-packed hour, making the story more palatable for a modern audience.”
-Dana Martin, Stage Raw on Measure For Measure
“This production was both brilliant and powerful, each character well defined, each actor speaking their lines clearly, distinctly and with true passion.”
-Morna Martell, Theatre Be Spoken Here on Titus Andronicus
“However, despite my reservations, Foolish Productions Co., under the direction of Michael Mulhearn made a believer out of me.”
“Foolish Production Co.’s daring to decision to mount the epic “A Gay Fantasia on National Themes” has paid off.”
-Julia Stier, Stage Raw on Angels In America: Millennium Approaches/Perestroika
“Foolish Production Co and director Mikey Mulhearn took on an enormous challenge when they decided to mount playwright Tony Kushner’s monumental Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning two-part epic Angels in America….and damn if they did not succeed!”
“Mulhearn and his cast really make every word, every emotion hit its target.”
-Rob Stevens, Haines His Way on Angels In America: Millennium Approaches/Perestroika
“The Foolish Production Company excels in, accessible, over-the-top, hilarity. From the sets to the full use of the cramped black box theater including audience seating, it was all technicolor.
Perfectly assembled in its chaotic design from music to pool inflatables, it frankly reminisces of old-school, Lady Bunny Wigstock, drag queen camp. And it's pretty wonderful.”
-Tracey Paleo, Broadway World on Twelfth Night
Groundling (Audience) Reviews
“I recommend art-lovers of all forms and even theater-phobic folks to check out these shows because they are as approachable as they are thoughtful and interesting -- there is truly something for everyone!”
-Rachel B
“Anyone who attends Twelfth Night in for an unconventional and highly entertaining performance. The small theater lends itself to inviting the audience into participation, rather than just observation.”
-Bev M
“If you are looking for a fun theater experience, or just looking to get more into Shakespeare, I would take a chance on these shows and come out. You will have fun and enjoy the passion the actors have for the material and the unique way that the shows have been directed. Highly recommend for a fun night out!”
-Kellie K
“I will never think of or look at Shakespeare in the same way.”
-Bob C
“As someone who couldn’t understand and enjoy Shakespeare in an educational or theatrical display; Foolish productions brings a different approach and energy to the classics that make me appreciate them more than anyone else has.”
-Sarah S
